  Adoption Procedures
You have done your research on the greyhound breed and you feel that a greyhound would be a wonderful addition to your family. There are several steps that you need to take to get the adoption procedure started.

First, there is required reading  you can chose the "Adopting a Racing Greyhound" or "Retired Racing Greyhounds for Dummies Book". If a sighthound is still on your wish list then come to one of our Petsmart Show and Tells on the third weekend of each month and meet some the greyhounds. Volunteers will be available to answer questions and concerns.

You may be at the point of wanting to make application for a greyhound and this can be accomplished in several ways. You can download the application from our web site, fill it out and mail it to one of the contacts listed on the top of the form or you might want to fill one out at one of the Show and Tells that you are visiting.

Next, a volunteer will contact you by email or telephone to visit with you about your application and learn more about you and your family's lifestyle.

Your veterinarian will be contacted to make sure that your past or current animals have received well checks and vaccinations in a timely and responsible manner. The references that you have listed will be called and the importance of this process is to get to know you better through your friends so that we can place a greyhound that will be suited for your home environment.

The final part of the adoption application process is to bring a prospective greyhound for a home visit. At this time, the volunteer will introduce the greyhound to your home environment, family members and other animals in the household. This also gives us the opportunity to check the fence and gates to make sure they are in good repair. The volunteer might also make suggestions about items in the house that might be dangerous to the greyhound such as plants, glass storm doors or items that might need to be moved or repositioned for the safety of the dog.

The home visit can progress to the greyhound being adopted during these proceedings or coming back for a second visit. The potential adopter might want some time to acquire a crate, elevated feeder and waterer as well as other accessories before finalizing the adoption. The time frame for this process from beginning to end might take up to two-three weeks to accomplish as we are all volunteers.

The adoption fee is $175 and is non-refundable as it is considered a donation. The greyhound will have been neutered or spayed, have their teeth cleaned, rabies shot, DHLP and Bordetella vaccinations, fecal checked and wormed if necessary, heartworm checked and put on preventative, and a new collar and lead are included.
